Enter the Hermit! Anyone who has run the Keep on the Borderlands adventure knows who this guy is.

For those of us that haven't, who is he?

There are a few characters in the adventure that the characters meet and are defined by their job, but never named. The Hermit, The Castillian (who rules the Keep), the Elven Advisor, The Captain of the Guard, The Priest, etc. The Hermit was the only one illustrated.

For the Mad Hermit every Dungeon Master makes a go at what they think a lunatic in the woods would be like. So in a way, he's a cypher, but every time I've heard someone describe their play-through of TKotB, the Hermit was always noteworthy.

So he's just another cog to drive forward the plot then?

Well in the old D&D adventures there wasn't a plot, there was just descriptions of buildings, rooms, the monsters that lived there, and maybe a sentence or two on what the monsters were up to. If there was any plot, it was entirely up to the DM and the players to generate it. I hope, with this comic, the story that comes out of the KotB adventure is an angle that people haven't considered before.

I've never played this module but I could see how this Hermit NPC could be a lot of fun. I like his expressions!

Thanks! The adventure was written in '81. And his characterization was the following: "For many years a solitary hermit has haunted this area of the forest, become progressively wilder and crazier and more dangerous. His home is a huge hollow oak..." It was up to any DM to make a character of him.
